IEEE Pune section extends scope of STEM education to elementary level

IEEE Pune Section has been working on many projects oriented towards STEM education.  Every year, number of lectures, workshops and tutorials focussing on different aspects of Science and Technology are arranged for the benefit of college students. Eu-Reka has been the Nation-level flagship event of Pune section for motivating high school children towards higher education in STEM, in which about 15,000 high school children participate every year. Recently, IEEE Pune section extended the scope of its STEM education activities towards elementary school teachers.

Mathematics is generally considered a difficult subject. As per one survey, every four out of five children in Classes 7-10 across the country are fearful of Mathematics and their fear of the subject grows as they progress to higher classes. Cuemath, an after-school live-class programme in Maths, surveyed 1,600 students all over India in June 2021 and explored key factors like perception, performance, and confidence for Mathematics. As per the survey, though there are several reasons for the disconnect, the core has been the ‘redundancy’ of conventional teaching. Home schooling during the pandemic have added to student woes, resulting in loss of interest and a fear of mathematics, as per the survey.

It is against this background that Joint Chapter of AP, MTT& EMC (JCAME) of IEEE Pune Section in collaboration with Bhagini Nivedita Pratishthan, Pune (BNP) conceived a project of conducting workshops for elementary school teachers, as part of IEEE AP-SCOPE activities. The objective of the workshops was to ‘train elementary and primary school teachers on activity-based teaching of Arithmetic’ and ‘to make arithmetic learning a fun activity.’ Bhagini Nivedita Pratishthan is an organisation consisting of like-minded women, driven by the motto of “everything for overall upliftment of women and children.” Established in 1979, BNP has been working on many innovative schemes involving ladies and children, for the benefit on economically- disadvantaged groups of society.

Two workshops on the theme ‘LEARNING ARITHMETIC MADE EASY’ were conducted by BNP as part of this project during September/ October 2022. The first workshop was held at Dighi, Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal area on 24 September 2022, where 14 elementary school teachers from 3 different schools and BNP ‘Abhyasika’ participated. The second workshop was held on 4th Oct. 2022 in Pune city area, where 10 teachers participated, who generally teach for 1st- 4th standards in different schools.  Ms Swati Joshi, who has 20 + years of experience in conducting similar training activities was the master resource person for both the workshops. Both events were well received by the participants, who wanted more programs of similar nature.

The project was sponsored by IEEE AP Society under its SCOPE program.
