IEEE Region 10 Student, Young Professionals, Women-in-Engineering and Life Member Congress 2022

The premier IEEE Region 10 Student, Young Professionals, Women-in-Engineering and Life Member Congress 2022 (R10 SYWL Congress 2022) was held at JEJU SHINHWA WORLD ,  Jeju Island, Korea, from 11th to 14th August 2022.  The Congress was a great platform for fostering innovation, promotion of cultural exchange and technical collaboration among members of IEEE Region 10.

A well-planned program of SYWL2022, engaged the audience with multiple informative and knowledgeable sessions,  team building activities and a number of contests to build the competitive spirit and showcase the vast and diverse cultures of IEEE Region 10.

The Congress included tracks for students, young professionals, WIE and Life members besides keynote speakers at the joint opening and closing sessions.  It was hosted by IEEE Seoul Section with a brilliant theme of  Sound and Young influences for World Leading  IEEE.

More than 50 members from different sections under India council made their presence during the congress.

UiPath for RPA

Event Details:

Imparting knowledge about upcoming technologies among the students. It was mentored under an Industry expert from UI Path Keerthi Hegde. The event had 2 sessions and aimed at Introducing RPA to students and its current scope in the industry. To connect Industry leaders with students.

The event succeeded in Providing Hands-on experience on trending technologies. It also provided insights on automation.

Key Takeaways:

The participants were happy with Hands-on learning with UiPath experts in offline mode. The one-on-one interaction helped in understanding in-depth concept and technology architecture.

Participants were able to analyze and enhance their skill set. They were also showcased to start with small projects on the same. Open discussion on architecture and diversity of technology and automation brought out beautiful Q & A interaction. Understanding insights of automation and other applications were successfully achieved by the event.

IEEE Distinguished Lecture Program : Connecting Academic R&D with Product Innovation: A Way forward

Event Details:

The event was held at LH-1 (Dept. Of ECE), VNIT Nagpur on 20th August 2022 at 03:30 pm by Prof. V. Ramgopal Rao, Fellow IEEE, FNAE, FASc, FNA, FNASc Pillay Chair Professor & Former Director, IIT Delhi.

In order to make the Indian research competitive and sustainable in terms of innovation and product development, a multitude of initiatives are required to be taken at the institutional and national level and this one of those.

In this talk, discussion was held on the changing scenario for product innovation in Indian academic and R&D institutions, and also it was seen how one can accelerate the culture of product innovation in the country through a multi-disciplinary approach.

Dr. Rao has over 480 research publications in the area of nano-scale devices & Nanoelectronics and is an inventor on over 50 patents, which include 20 issued US patents and that’s what contributes even more in making this event an extremely informative one.

Panel Discussion with Frontline Warriors: Restoring Stability Post Covid

Objective:

  • The panel discussion with Frontline Warriors on Restoring Stability Post-Covid was held on 16th August 2022.
  • The main objective was to know the different ways in which our government, and front-line heroes have helped to restore the stability post-covid to honor the Independence Day in all of its glory.
  • The event began with the host of the day addressing the panelists and audience members. Following that, Dr. Rachana Garg, Chair of IEEE Delhi Section and Student Activities Committee, delivered the welcome address and gave a speech about Delhi Section.
  • The discussion with the eminent panelist started with an insightful and participatory debate, where some thought-provoking questions were raised.
  • The talk was followed by an audience Q&A session.
  • The speakers reacted with smart responses that sparked lively audience participation. 
  • The session was very successful with a lot of deliberation.
  • At the end the vote thanks were proposed by Miss Vaidehi Purohit.

Alexa Skill Development Program

Event Details:
To maintain the continuation of Student Development, Department of Computer Engineering, SOCET and Silver Oak University came up with “Alexa Skill Development Program” sponsored by DST, Govt. of Gujarat and GUJCOST. On the first day, session was more focused on giving basic knowledge and understanding for next day’s hands-on session. The event began at 9:30 AM following a warm greeting and a heartfelt bouquet from Dr. Jay Dave to our esteemed speaker Mr. Harshal Trivedi. Complex problem queries require basic knowledge of logical understanding to get it solved. Mentioning the behavior of technological market, he than explains the change of technology over the course of time. The next day, participants were instructed with basic programming for Alexa Skill Development alongside creating ‘Alexa Skills’. The session was concluded after solving the raised doubts of the participants. Day was focused on making the Alexa Skills.  In the final day, to see the understanding gained by the participants, an individual task was given to all. The event was concluded with Dr. Satvik Khara proffering a memento to Mr. Harshal Trivedi as a token of gratitude. At last Prof. Mayuresh Kulkarni appreciated the speaker Mr. Harshal Trivedi for and the assistant for the event Mr. Himanshu Patel for their restless effort to make the ‘Alexa Skill Development Program ‘ a success.

Through this event, attendees were able to build custom commands and skills to make their interaction model more user friendly and serviceable.

Renaissance 3.0

Event Details:

Renaissance 3.0 is a flagship event. The event was conducted for the enlightenment of dormant SBs in the Kerala section. The prior edition of Renaissance was extremely useful for raising these types of SBs. So, the students who participated in Renaissance 3.0 are now able to handle different activities in their SBs.

iGEEK: The Origin of GFG, DSA and Interview Tips

Event Details:

IEEE IEM Student Branch organized ” iGEEK” on the 26th of August from 3:00 pm at the CII Auditorium at IEM Management Campus.

Sandeep Jain, CEO and Co-Founder of GeeksforGeeks and notable alumni of IIT Roorkee was the speaker for the event and thereby excitement among the students was at its peak! The auditorium was packed with almost 500 attendees with every one of them eagerly waiting to witness the very tech sensation. The speaker warmly greeted all the attendees followed by a short introduction about his early life, challenges he faced, his inspiration for starting GeeksforGeeks, and elucidated his career on this platform!

By the end of his exciting and interactive speech, we an exciting Q&A session was conducted! He clarified every one of them in great depth.iGEEK turned out to be a massive success with the enthusiastic participation of all the attendees, volunteers and student branch members! It was an interactive, exciting, and enriching session and the attendees were extremely benefitted by the event.

Technical Lecture: “Designing the Query Engine for AWESOME, an Analytical Polystore” by Dr. Amarnath Gupta

Event Details:

Technical Lecture was organized by IEEE CS Kolkata Chapter on 30th August 2022 from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM IST at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Jadavpur University. Dr. Amarnath Gupta delivered a lecture on Designing the Query Engine for AWESOME, an Analytical Polystore.

Dr. Gupta received his PhD in Computer Science from Jadavpur University in India. He is currently a Full Research Scientist at the San Diego Supercomputer Center of UC San Diego and directs the Advanced Query Processing Lab. His primary areas of research include semantic information integration, large-scale graph databases, ontology management, event data management and query processing techniques.

A polystore is a data platform that sits on top of multiple data management systems that support different data models and provide a query language and a query processing engine that can query across these systems. A polystore is “analytical’’ if, in addition to data stores, it also supports one or more analytical libraries such that a user can freely interleave data retrieval and analysis operations. An end-to-end analytical polystore called AWESOME has been developed that supports a workload specification language called ADIL and operates over relational, graph and text data models.

Five-Day Short-Term Training Program (STTP) on Antenna Design: Future Trends and New Applications

Event Details:

Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering and IEEE student branch of CARE College of Engineering, Trichy, Tamilnadu, India . The chief guest was Dr. S. Shanthi, Principal CARE College of Engineering, India. This was organized Five-Day Short-Term Training Program (STTP) on “Antenna Design: Future Trends and New Applications” (Online) from 01.08.2022 to 05.08.2022. This STTP was intended for all Engineering students, faculty & research scholars of AICTE-approved technical Institutions.

Participants: Engineering students, faculty & research scholars of AICTE-approved technical Institutions.

Engineering students, research scholars and faculty gained exposure to the world of antenna design and its prospects.

Social Visit to an Old Age Home

Event Details:

IEEE SB VIT Pune organized a 1-day social visit to Swarnavihar, an Old Age retirement

home. The visit took place on 15th August, on the occasion of  ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’. Visit saw the participation of ExCom (Executive Committee) members as well.

The members and the residents participated wholeheartedly in the sessions held. Following the fun sessions, an open mic was conducted where some elders volunteered and shared their thoughts and life experiences. They recorded a joyous response towards the activities conducted, and were delighted upon the impact of the interactions the members had with them.

Following this, saplings donation from the club towards the residency took place. The visit concluded with the lowering of the National Flag by the residents.

Major takeaway from this visit was – “Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.”

Apart from this, the team attained a glimpse of the past experiences of aged people. Peeking into their lives, the team learnt several noteworthy lessons so as to imbibe new ways of life.

STEM Inspired School Series

Event Details:

Science and its miracle are what IEEE is spreading across the world, Marking this noble cause, IEEE Bangalore section-driven school adoption program along with STEM Inspired School Series, many events were conducted across the state. IEEE NHCE SB, IEEE NITK SB, IEEE RVCE SB, IEEE VCET SB, IEEE PESCE Mandya, IEEE KLSGIT SB, IEEE JCE SB, IEEE SCE SB, IEEE SLN SB, IEEE Mangalore University SB and IEEE UVCE SB have marked successful sessions to bring new insights to high school students. IEEE  SIT SB has started Weekly sessions at JNV- Tumkur. The session was targeted at young minds to have hands-on experience with their scientific learning aspects. Jayakrishnan Divakaran, global sight leader, launched the session by addressing and motivating young minds regarding scientific beliefs and systematic approaches. These sessions are also involving Atal Tinkering Lab, nurturing young minds with future technical aspects.

The event established students’ interaction and networking. With powerful Q and A sessions, it explored the level of innovation in young minds. Games and technical events helped in exposure to real-time engineering in simple ways. The origin of science and its dependencies spread its note towards the mind of future makers. Identification and analysis of basic components along with their functionality made their theoretical skills stronger. Hands-on experience with basic circuits enhanced their curiosity about learning and improved their analytical skills.

During my initial days of under graduation, I felt like changing the track/way of learning things, then I came to know about IEEE and IEEE CS Chapter. Then I started working to start a student branch chapter at my institute. This is the first reason for taking the IEEE membership. Through my participation in IEEE, I am able to gain a better understanding of my professional development. Volunteering at the student branch, section, and global levels has given me confidence in accepting and fulfilling responsibilities.

IEEEXTREME 16.0: Registration is Open

Registration for the IEEEXtreme Competition is now open! IEEEXtreme is a global, virtual challenge in which teams of IEEE Student Members – advised and proctored by an IEEE member, and often supported by an IEEE Student Branch – compete in a 24-hour time span against each other to solve a set of programming problems. Learn more about the competition at www.ieeextreme.org.

This year’s competition will be held on 22 October at 00:00:00 UTC.

As a global competition, IEEEXtreme is always virtual. Typically, students would compete with their team and their proctor in the same location, in most cases at their local Student Branch. This year, the IEEEXtreme committee will allow the proctored teams to compete using online Video Conferencing Platforms. The committee will be doing its best to keep teams engaged throughout the 24 – hours.

Global Student Video Challenge: 45-Seconds to Make an Impact & Earn $1k

Little-known hacks, methods, tips, languages, or code libraries can unlock so many possibilities of how we use technology! What may these be? That’s for you to tell us.

Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to create a video highlighting a technology hack or tip that:

  • Improves lives
  • Solves problems
  • Impacts future research
  • Makes daily life easier
  • Showcases an unknown device feature

Sounds easy? The real challenge is you have only 45 seconds to explain it. Don’t know where to start? Here are a few ideas:

  • Create a “did you know?” video and share a simple tip, such as improving battery life or increasing computer speed
  • Highlight a resource others may not know about, such as a coding library
  • Share a fun trick or DIY for how to create an at-home helpful device

Submissions may range in complexity — just be creative!

This competition is open to IEEE Computer Society student members. Students may choose to work collaboratively as a team or individually. Videos will be shared across IEEE Computer Society social media channels throughout the competition and will be judged based on engagement levels (i.e. likes, comments, and shares).
