Outstanding Volunteer - Sudip Misra

Sudip Misra is a Professor and Abdul Kalam Technology Innovation National Fellow in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. His research interests include Wireless Sensor Networks and Internet of Things. Professor Misra has published over 350 research papers and 12 books. He was the recipient of several academic awards and fellowships such as National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI) – Young Scientist Award, Young Systems Scientist Award (Systems Society of India), Young Engineers Award (Institution of Engineers, India), NASI  Swarna Jayanti Puraskar (Golden Jubilee Award), Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship (Germany), and Careers360 Outstanding Faculty Award in Computer Science for 2018 from the Honorable Minister for Human Resource Development of India. He was the recipient of the IEEE ComSoc Asia Pacific Outstanding Young Researcher Award at IEEE GLOBECOM 2012, California, USA and IEEE Systems Journal Best Paper Award in 2018, 2019, and 2020. His team received the GYTI Award 2018 in the hands of the President of India for socially relevant innovations.

Dr. Misra has been serving as the Associate Editor of different journals such as the IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing, IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Computing, IEEE Network, and IEEE Systems Journal. He is a Fellow of the NASI, Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE), the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), UK, Royal Society of Public Health (RSPH), UK, and the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering (IETE), India. Professor Misra is the distinguished lecturer of the IEEE Communications Society. He has been serving the Executive Committee of IEEE Kharagpur Section since 2008 in different capacities. Presently, he is the Chair of the IEEE Kharagpur Section. He is the Director and Co-Founder of the IoT startup, SensorDrops Networks Private Limited.

Sudip Misra has been an active member of IEEE since 2008. During this period, IEEE has been truly instrumental not only in his career growth and professional development, but also in motivating him to work for the advancement of technology for the betterment of humanity.

He joined the IEEE Kharagpur Section as a volunteer in 2009. Since then, he has been serving in various key positions such as Executive Committee Member (2009-14), Treasurer (2015), Professional Activities Chair (2016), Assistant Secretary (2017), Treasurer (2018), Secretary (2019), Vice Chair (2020), and Chair (2021). Throughout this period, he has volunteered to organize various events in our Section. These include talks by eminent scientists, workshops, the TechSym conference, and field trips to industrial plants. He has also represented our section as a speaker in various IEEE conferences and events such as IEEE ComSoc School Series Bangalore 2021 and Joint Workshop on 6G by IEEE ComSoc Bangalore Section and IEEE Kharagpur Section. Presently, he serves as a distinguished lecturer of the IEEE Communications Society (2020-21) and has already delivered lectures in different IEEE sections. He also serves as the Chair and Coordinator of a few Special Interest Groups (SIG) of IEEE ComSoc. Additionally, he has engaged in delivering keynotes and chairing sessions in various IEEE conferences such as IEEE ICC, IEEE Globecom, IEEE ANTS, and so on. He has been serving in the editorial boards of different IEEE journals and has also organized multiple special issues.

For the past several years, volunteering with IEEE has rewarded him with immense satisfaction by helping him to serve the academic and research community. This, in turn, has made me increasingly passionate towards his volunteering activities and he plans to continue contributing to his community as well as to IEEE in future. Therefore, he strongly believed that he was a suitable candidate for the IEEE India Council – Outstanding Volunteer Award 2021.
